2020 Vizion, 1984
Maik’s final work while at Goldsmiths was 2020 Vizion, a projection of Orwell’s novel 1984 thirty-six years into the future. The piece consisted of a book written in United-Nations-style-official-speak, maps, cards, postcards and holograms, where the world in 2020 is divided into perfectly rectangular states with no reference to actual boundaries (political or geographic)
2020 Vizion shows a distinct organizing, meticulous and rigid approach to geopolitical and social issues. The grid and the stamp-album type layouts are an attempt to organize and comprehend the world from a Western Cartesian mindset, while at the same time often juxtaposing the seriousness of the format with the subversiveness of the content.
