Istanbul Abstract, 2012-13
Maik’s recent works explore the space between the real and the abstract. Found objects – walls, graffiti, urban detritus – become painterly through the level of detail and cropping. The abstraction becomes complete where the place-specific identity is often lost via blur or motion or the level of detail as in Istanbul Abstract or via the new medium of oil on canvas as in Istanbul Landscapes. Again the themes of place, time and identity are present but often with an otherworldly or transcendental undertone.
